What your BMI can and cannot tell you
BMI compares weight with height and is commonly used as a general screening tool. It does not measure body fat directly and does not account for muscle mass, body composition, medical history, pregnancy, or many other individual factors.
| BMI range | General category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5–24.9 | Normal weight |
| 25.0–29.9 | Overweight |
| 30.0 and above | Obesity |

Is BMI enough to decide if a program is right for me?
No. BMI is only one screening tool. A licensed healthcare provider may consider BMI, medical history, medications, health goals, and other factors.
Does a high BMI mean I qualify for medication?
Not necessarily. Eligibility depends on a provider evaluation and applicable medical guidelines. This website cannot determine eligibility.
Can athletes have a high BMI?
Yes. BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat, so it can be less useful for some athletes and highly muscular individuals.
